Read the passage and decide whether each statement is true or false.

For most of human history, the night sky was one of the few sights shared by everyone on the planet. That is no longer true. Artificial light from cities spills upwards and scatters in the atmosphere, hiding all but the brightest stars from roughly eighty per cent of the world's population.

The consequences reach far beyond astronomy. Migrating birds navigate by starlight and are drawn off course by illuminated buildings. Sea turtle hatchlings instinctively crawl towards the brightest horizon, which for thousands of years meant the open sea; near a lit-up coast they now move inland instead. Unlike most forms of pollution, however, this one disappears the moment the light is switched off.
